Happy World Food Day! 🌍❤️

Food connects us to our people, our history, our communities, and the knowledge passed down through generations.

This World Food Day, #afroeatsbyhaja was honoured to facilitate a Salt - Spice Grinding Worskshop that brought people together to explore Ghanaian ingredients, experiment with flavours, and learn more about the stories behind the food we eat.

Using sea salt harvested in Ada as our base, participants created their own spice blends using a selection of aromatic ingredients, including prekese, alligator pepper, African nutmeg, and more.

It was a beautiful reminder that food education can be interactive, cultural, and community-driven.

A special thank you to the @ghanafoodmovement for making this experience possible, and to everyone who joined us at the spice table. ❤️

Another Ghanaian cooking experience in Accra 🇬🇭

This time, @emamet17 & Jasmine joined me in the kitchen to make jollof, fried chicken and kelewele — with a little introduction to the local ingredients and spices behind the dishes.

A day of cooking, learning and, of course, eating. ❤️

Part 1 of 2.

Today, we have something very special to celebrate. ❤️

When I started Afro Eats by haja, I knew I wanted the business to create impact beyond the experiences we host. So, 5% of the net profit from every Afro Eats by haja booking is set aside for @sustainherfuture — an initiative created to support girls through education, mentorship, skills development and opportunities.

Getting our girls’ club off the ground has taken much longer than we hoped. For almost two years, we have been working through the necessary channels to make it happen, and we are still working towards launching our first school-based programme very soon.

But we didn’t want to wait for the perfect programme to begin making an impact.

Earlier this year, we used the funds we had accumulated through Afro Eats by haja to support my 15-year-old cousin who had stepped away from formal education and wanted to learn a practical skill.
We enrolled her in a six-month professional makeup artistry programme, supported her learning materials and stayed connected with her tutor throughout her training.

And today, she graduated. 🎓❤️

She now has a practical skill she can continue developing as she works towards becoming a professional makeup artist.

This is exactly why @sustainherfuture exists.

Sometimes, creating a future for a girl starts with giving her access to the right opportunity at the right time.

This is only our beginning. We want to continue supporting girls through vocational training, education, mentorship and our upcoming girls’ club — and we’re incredibly excited about what’s ahead.

We started at Nima Market, one of Accra’s vibrant neighbourhood markets, where food, people, movement and everyday life all come together.

From market stalls to street-side bites, the best way to experience a city is sometimes to slow down, walk through it, and taste it along the way.

Beautifully plated Ghanaian dishes just give us so much joy. 🥹🤎

Especially when we know how much work went into getting to this point — the planning, the prep, the cooking, the little details, and having our guests right there with their hands in everything.

One of the unexpected things we found while exploring Nima Market 🇬🇭🌿

We came across this traditional herbal remedy from a local herbalist, traditionally used to support blood circulation. It’s broken into pieces and prepared by boiling or soaking in clean water before straining the liquid.

There’s so much more to Nima than food. Every walk reveals another layer of Ghanaian culture 🇬🇭

Local markets like Agbogbloshie hold so much knowledge about food. The Aunties know exactly where everything comes from, how it’s used and, sometimes, which ones work best for a particular dish.

Perhaps the supermarket isn’t always the most interesting place to shop. 🤭

A little full circle moment 🥹

When Ms. Akos booked my cooking class, I had no idea she had found me through ChatGPT.

She told me she simply asked ChatGPT for something different to do in Accra, and when the options came up, my cooking class was the only one that wasn’t a restaurant.

I remember thinking… wow.

When I started Afro Eats by haja almost two years ago, I never imagined that one day someone would simply search for an experience in Accra and somehow, Afro Eats by Haja would be one of the names that comes up.

That still feels surreal.

I’m so grateful for every person who has booked, reviewed, recommended, shared, or simply told someone about Afro Eats by haja. ❤️

From wondering if people would find me… to realizing they actually are.
